La Plaine des Cafres is more of a pass-through than a destination but it’s worth slowing down for. Set between the Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise massifs, this high plateau feels more like the Auvergne than the tropics. Fog rolls in fast, cows graze next to tamarind trees, and locals sell fresh milk and cheese by the roadside.

If you’re headed to Pas de Bellecombe for a volcano hike, you’ll likely drive through here early — pause at dawn for misty views and crisp air. There are also a few worthy stops:

• La Cité du Volcan – high-tech museum on Fournaise, with interactive exhibits and a massive 4D dome film

• Nez de Bœuf Viewpoint – panoramic overlook into the Rivière des Remparts canyon

• Maison du Volcan bakery – cheap, strong coffee and stuffed croissants before the summit

• Local farm stalls – cheese, yogurt, and charcuterie from cool-climate producers

No hiking required, just slow roads, sweeping green fields, and the occasional sudden burst of sun through the mist.
