Piton Papangue is a lesser-known viewpoint above Saint-Leu offering a peaceful lookout across the west coast, often with a breeze, bird sightings, and almost no crowds. There's no signage, no shop, and no bus stop, which is part of the charm.
What to expect:
Access by narrow road, with limited parking near the top
Open grassy area with panoramic views over Saint-Leu and the ocean
Short walking paths around the summit, unmarked and a bit wild
Spot Réunion’s endemic bird of prey, the papangue, circling overhead
Locals come here for picnics or sunset, but it stays mostly quiet
No facilities, no vendors, no guide. Just trees, sky, and space to think. A good place to breathe after a crowded beach or hike.
👉 Bring water and snacks if you plan to linger. Wind picks up in the afternoon, so mornings are calmer for photos or watching birds.
