Bassin du Diable is just outside Saint-Denis, but it doesn’t feel like it. As soon as you start the descent into the ravine, city noise fades and the air cools. The trail is rough and sometimes muddy, but manageable if you take it slow. At the bottom: a dark pool under a rocky overhang, fed by a narrow cascade that keeps flowing even in dry spells.

It’s not as well-known as other basins on the island, which means fewer crowds and less litter, for now. Some people swim here, but the atmosphere leans more quiet retreat than wild plunge. There’s no infrastructure, no signs, and no bins, so bring what you need and pack it all out.

👉 Wear grippy shoes. The descent is steep and slick, especially in the shade where moss doesn’t dry.
