Commerson Crater doesn’t announce itself. You park by the roadside, follow a short dirt track, and suddenly you’re staring into a 200-meter-deep volcanic scar, almost perfectly round, dark, and silent. There’s no lava here, no smoke, just the still, quiet aftermath of collapse.

The viewing platform is well-maintained, with solid barriers and space to take it in safely. It’s not a long visit, but it’s one that stays with you. This is a side of Réunion’s volcanic story that’s more subtle and introspective than the explosive drama of Piton de la Fournaise.

👉 If you're lucky enough to visit after rain, look for waterfalls tracing the crater walls. They only appear briefly, but they’re unreal.
