Formica Léo is the first landmark on the Piton de la Fournaise trail — and one of the easiest volcanic craters you can reach on foot. Named after the antlion insect (because of its bowl shape), this reddish-brown cone sits in the middle of the lava plain, clearly visible from the Pas de Bellecombe viewpoint.
To get there, you’ll descend the steep zigzag path down the caldera wall (about 100 m elevation drop), then cross the ancient lava field on foot. The ground is uneven, dry, and often dusty — but the walk is scenic and manageable for kids or casual hikers.
At the base, the cone rises gently from the black lava, with red-and-orange mineral tones and visible lava layers. You can walk around it (and technically on it), though it’s best to avoid climbing the fragile slopes to prevent erosion.
Formica Léo is a great turnaround point if you want a volcano experience without committing to the full hike to Dolomieu. Early morning is best for light and lower temperatures.
👉 Local tip: The descent is easy — the return climb can feel tougher in midday sun. Bring water, hat, and shoes with grip.
