Directions

Le Grand Bord is one of the most impressive ridgeline trails on the island, hugging the edge of the cirque de Mafate with nothing between you and the canyon floor but open air. Starting from Le Maïdo or as part of a guided loop, the path traces the outer rim of the caldera with wide views over the islets and peaks below. It's called “the big edge” for a reason. The drop is sheer, and the feeling of walking beside it is unforgettable.

The trail itself is not overly technical but does require a head for heights and steady footing. It rolls along the ridge through low-altitude scrub and exposed volcanic rock, with lookout points that leave most visitors in stunned silence. There’s no barrier, no noise, and no towns in sight once you get going. Just sky, stone, and the sound of wind over the rim.

👉 Hike it early in the morning before the clouds rise. After 10 a.m., Mafate is often hidden in mist, and you lose the entire view.
