The trail to Grand Bassin is one of the most atmospheric and meaningful hikes on La Réunion — not just for the nature, but for the connection to local life it offers.

It starts at Bois Court, where a clifftop belvédère gives you your first glimpse of the hanging valley far below — green, misty, and dotted with tiny rooftops, barely visible from above. The trail descends steeply into this natural amphitheater, via countless stone steps and switchbacks carved into the forested cliff.

As you descend, the temperature warms, the vegetation thickens, and the sounds of rushing water and birdsong replace the wind.

At the bottom, you’ll arrive in the peaceful village of Grand Bassin — an îlet without roads, accessible only by foot. Some residents still live here year-round, tending gardens, hosting hikers, and preparing home-cooked meals with what they grow. Several gîtes and small table d’hôtes offer creole dishes, fresh juice, and sometimes overnight stays.

From the village, a short path leads to Cascade du Voile de la Mariée — a slender, ethereal waterfall tumbling into a shaded pool. It’s the perfect place to rest, picnic, or just take in the lush beauty of the valley.

👉 Pro Tip: Bring cash if you plan to eat or stay — there are no ATMs. Call ahead if you'd like to book a meal or gîte at places like La Ferrière or Chez Merlin.
👉 Hidden Gem: Visit during March–April to see wild guava in bloom, and ask locals about the legend of the “Bride’s Veil” waterfall.
