Cap Méchant is where you come to watch the ocean crash into black volcanic cliffs — hard. It's not a swimming spot. It's a place to feel the wind, walk the lava rocks, and stand at the edge of something that doesn’t care you’re there. You’ll smell salt and seaweed before you even park.

What makes it worth stopping:

  • Short trails across twisted lava flows and past pandanus trees

  • A grassy picnic area with picnic tables and views

  • Good swell = full show — waves pounding the cliff wall, water exploding into white spray

  • Easy access by car if you're doing a south coast drive

It’s a raw stretch of coastline, not polished, and that’s the appeal. The grass is kept short, the signage is minimal, and the path ends where the land does.

👉 Local tip: If you're here around lunch, grab a table at Le Cap Méchant across the road — they serve boucané, chouchou gratin, and wood-fired chicken without ceremony but with flavour.
