Notre-Dame des Laves is one of the most powerful places to visit on La Réunion — not because of size or grandeur, but because of the story it holds within its walls.

Located in the village of Piton Sainte-Rose, this humble church stood directly in the path of a lava flow from the 1977 eruption of Piton de la Fournaise. The molten rock surrounded the church, burned through parts of the grounds, and miraculously stopped at the altar, sparing the building from destruction.

Today, visitors come not only to admire its setting — framed by black lava, green hills, and sea views — but also to reflect on resilience, faith, and the unpredictable force of nature. It's a quiet place that invites contemplation and gratitude.

👉 Pro Tip: Look for the preserved lava around the church walls and entryway — some of it is still visibly fused to the structure.
👉 Hidden Gem: Step inside the church when open — the simple interior is rich with symbolism, and occasionally locals will share firsthand stories of the eruption.
