Col de Bellevue is less about what you do there and more about how you feel crossing it. As you drive the RN3 between Plaine des Palmistes and Plaine des Cafres, the road crests here at around 1600 meters, slicing through a high, open landscape that shifts dramatically with the weather. One moment, you’re driving through golden pastures with ocean views. Next, you’re in a dense fog with raindrops tapping the windscreen and trees bending in the wind.

This pass sits on the dividing ridge between the lush east and the drier central highlands. It marks the entrance to the volcano route if you're heading south and offers a rare feeling of openness, especially when clouds part and you get a clear look toward Piton des Neiges. You won’t find cafés or lookout platforms, but the rawness of the place speaks for itself.

👉 Pull over at one of the gravel shoulders near the summit right after sunrise. It’s the best chance you’ll have for cloud-free views and golden light over the Piton de la Fournaise plateau.
