Historic Downtown Sarasota is a walkable, vibrant hub of history, arts, food, and culture that tells the story of how this Gulf Coast town grew from an agricultural settlement into a thriving cultural destination. The Downtown Sarasota Historic District includes buildings dating back to the early 20th century (built roughly 1909–1959), many of which are preserved and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
What makes the area truly unique is the blend of history and modern life — you can stroll tree-lined avenues, duck into century-old storefronts now housing boutiques and galleries, sip a craft cocktail, and wander through art spaces all within a few blocks. The layout is compact and walkable, so you can park once and explore on foot from brunch to sunset.
A few of my favorite spots:
Duval's Fresh. Local. Seafood – A Sarasota staple for fresh Gulf seafood, creative cocktails, and a laid-back yet elevated vibe.
Fork and Hen On Main – Casual, comfort-driven chicken and Southern classics perfect for lunch or a quick bite.
State Street Eating House + Cocktails – Farm-to-table creativity and craft cocktails with a local foodie flair.
Owen's Fish Camp -Downtown SRQ – A local favorite for Southern-style seafood with big portions and big flavor.
Selva Downtown Sarasota – A lively Spanish/Peruvian spot with great dinner options and eclectic flavors.
Downtown Sarasota is also known for quirky boutiques and galleries — especially around areas like Historic Burns Court and the Towles Court Artist Colony — where you’ll find everything from antiques and vintage finds to local art and one-of-a-kind gifts.
Art lovers will enjoy strolling from gallery to gallery along Palm Avenue and Main Street, and you can even take a historical walking tour that highlights Downtown’s architectural gems and stories while you explore.
As the sun sets, Downtown comes alive with cocktail lounges, wine bars, and live music — ideal for an evening drink after dinner. The walkable streets make it easy to hop between stops without missing a beat.
