Dames Cave is one of Florida’s hidden outdoor gems — a natural limestone cave system tucked into the Citrus Wildlife Management Area of the Withlacoochee State Forest. The main cave, often reachable by a short half-mile hike on easy forest trails, is notable because caves aren’t something most people expect in Florida. Once you arrive, you’ll see a large opening formed by a collapsed ceiling, sunlight streaming in, and a few smaller connected passages you can explore a bit if you bring a flashlight. The area also connects to other nearby spots like Peace Cave and Danger Cave if you want to extend your adventure.
The trail is dog-friendly (leashed) and open sunrise to sunset year-round, but there are no restrooms or facilities at the site, so plan accordingly.
Parking & Cost:
• Dames Cave Parking is a small informal lot right off S Lecanto Hwy (State Road 491) where most visitors leave their cars free before heading in on foot. There are no designated spots or fees, and space is limited, so come early on weekends.
