Raccoon Island (a.k.a. Sandspur Island) – A tiny uninhabited island in Biscayne Bay just off North Miami that’s become famous for its friendly wild raccoon residents — a truly unusual Miami hidden gem you won’t find on most travel maps.

  • Wildlife draw: The island is home to a community of raccoons that roam freely and often appear curious and comfortable around visitors — just remember they’re wild animals you shouldn’t feed by hand.

  • How to visit: There’s no road access — most people reach it by boat, kayak, paddleboard or a guided tour across Biscayne Bay from Miami Beach or nearby marinas. Check out my link to a great boat and kayak tour to Raccoon Island. Highly recommend!
