If you’re anywhere near Islamorada and you’re into nature, geology, or just really cool roadside stops, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is a top pick. It’s a small but fascinating state park where you can literally walk among exposed fossilized coral reef — the same ancient reef that formed the foundation of the Keys.
The park has about 1 mile of easy, self‑guided trails that take you through shaded hammocks, past old quarry walls, and around geological formations with coral, mollusk, and other fossil impressions in the limestone.
A few tips from me:
It’s open Thursday–Monday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed Tuesday & Wednesday).
Trails are mostly easy and family‑friendly, but wear good shoes (not flip‑flops) because the terrain is rocky in spots.
There are restrooms, picnic tables, and a visitor center with info and exhibits.
This place feels like a tiny natural museum you can walk through. You don’t need tons of time — an hour or so is perfect.
