The devotional complex on Monte Velate, near the city of Varese, is a masterpiece of faith, art, and landscape harmony. Built between 1604 and 1698, it features a two-kilometer Sacred Way lined with 14 chapels illustrating the Mysteries of the Rosary, leading up to a sanctuary and crypt. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003—along with the other Sacri Monti of Lombardy and Piedmont—it offers visitors a deeply spiritual and aesthetic journey. Along the path, 17th-century Lombard artists brought biblical scenes to life through frescoes and sculptures, culminating at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, a revered Marian pilgrimage site with medieval roots and panoramic views over the lakes and plains below.
