If You’re Renting in Winter:
✅ Choose a car with studded tires
✅ Make sure it has heated seats and defrost systems

✅ Rent a 4WD if going beyond main roads
⚠️ Many rental companies charge extra for crossing borders (e.g. to Finland)

If you wish to explore beyond Tromsø or to do your own aurora hunting without booking a tour - then you may need to rent a car. Many of the best spots are often off the main bus routes, especially if you're into sunrise / sunset photography, quiet beaches, or unplanned stops.

5. 💡 Rental Car Tips & Hidden Costs

  • Book early in summer—cars sell out weeks ahead

  • Check insurance—winter damage (like cracked windshields) isn’t always covered

  • Fuel is pricey (~£1.80–£2.20/L), and gas stations outside Tromsø are sparse

  • Automatic vs Manual: Many cars are manual by default—double-check if you need automatic

  • Parking in Tromsø is metered and limited; look for hotel options with free parking

  • Book a car with studded winter tires between November and April. And go for a compact SUV if you can - higher clearance will help if there's any snow buildup on side roads.

We rented our car with Enterprise, we highly recommend Avis as well (but book you car in advance as Avis was fully booked when we finally decided to rent a car).
