When to See Autumn Foliage in & around Kyoto?
The peak season runs from mid-November to early December — and yes, it is absolutely worth planning your Japan trip around it.

If you’re dreaming of seeing Kyoto’s iconic red maple leaves, plan your visit between mid-November and early December. This is when temple gardens, mountain valleys, and riversides transform into vivid reds, oranges, and golds. My personal favourite time is the last week of November — the colours are usually at their brightest, the air is cool and clear, and it’s perfect for long days of sightseeing around Kyoto, Arashiyama, and nearby towns.
🍁 My Pro Tip: Avoid weekends and national holidays if you can. Foliage season is one of Kyoto’s busiest times, and popular spots like Eikando, Tofukuji, and Arashiyama fill up quickly. Go early in the morning or just before sunset for fewer crowds and beautiful light.
📸 Many temples offer special evening illuminations during peak season. Bring a camera or phone with good low-light settings (+ a tripod if you can)— the glowing maple leaves reflected in ponds are some of the most magical sights you’ll see in Japan.
Your best chance:
🍁 Visit between mid-November and early December
This is when most of Kyoto and surrounding areas, including Arashiyama, Ohara, and Takao, reach peak colour.
🍁 Stay 3–4 nights or more
Peak timing shifts slightly each year depending on temperature, so giving yourself a few days increases your chance of hitting the perfect moment.
🍁 Explore beyond central Kyoto
Venture to places like Takao, Kurama, Ohara, or Uji. These areas offer breathtaking scenery and fewer crowds, especially on weekdays.
🍁 Check foliage forecasts
Websites like Japan-Guide and WeatherNews post weekly updates showing how colours are progressing across Kyoto.
You don’t need any special apps — just comfortable shoes, a flexible schedule, and a willingness to wander through temples, gardens, and riverside paths. Autumn in Kyoto feels like stepping into a living painting. 🍁
