We spent 2 nights in march 2024, tucked away in a handcrafted shepherd’s hut in Longnor, right in the heart of the Peak District National Park — and it felt like stepping out of everyday life. The hut sits next to a farm in rolling countryside, with five-mile views that glow gold at sunrise and fade into soft purples at dusk. Chrome Hill is just a few minutes drive away, so you can slip out early for a walk in the first light or climb it in time for sunset without seeing another soul.
The space inside the hut is small but beautifully thought out: a snug double bed with crisp linens, a private shower room, and a kitchen just big enough to make lazy breakfasts. Underfloor heating keeps the whole hut warm, even when the wind rattles outside, and the double doors open straight onto a wooden deck — the perfect spot to sip coffee in the morning chill or a glass of wine as the sun dips behind the hills.
What we loved most was the stillness. At night, it’s almost completely silent, broken only by the occasional call of an owl. In the mornings, mist settles low in the valley, and you can watch it lift as you plan the day’s hike. It feels remote and romantic without being impractical — you’ll need a car to get here, but the village of Longnor is close enough for pub food and essentials.
If you’re after a place that’s peaceful, scenic, and just a little bit magical, this hut is the kind of getaway you’ll want to keep to yourself — but can’t help telling everyone about.
