Llynau Diwaunydd has to be one of Snowdonia’s best-kept secrets — hardly anyone seems to know about it, and there’s no proper route marked on Google Maps, making it tricky to find online. Recommended by our Airbnb host, this remote pair of lakes near Blaenau Ffestiniog felt completely ours during the 3-hour return hike — we didn’t see another soul.
The landscape is stunning, with glacially-formed basins, dramatic slopes, and crystal-clear waters perfect for wild swimming or a picnic, giving a real French Alps vibe. It’s also a known spot for brown trout and Arctic char. The path is decent but unsigned, so a GPS or map is essential. You can park at the trailhead (53.048154, -3.934052) — a tiny layover for 5 cars — or start from the other side of the mountains along the A road.
Why we loved it: The solitude, alpine-like scenery, and quiet waters make it feel like a private mountain escape. Perfect for hikers, swimmers, or anyone who wants to experience Snowdonia off the beaten track.
Tip: Go early or late for the best light and the most peaceful experience. Make sure to bring sturdy shoes, snacks, and water — it’s wild but worth it.
