The Dovedale Stepping Stones are one of the Peak District’s most iconic sights — and even after many visits, they never lose their charm. Crossing the River Dove stone by stone with Thorpe Cloud rising ahead feels timeless, like stepping straight into a postcard.

They’re just a 10-minute flat walk from the National Trust car park at Dovedale (DE6 2AZ), which has toilets and refreshments. Parking is free for members, otherwise £6 up to 4 hours or £8 over 4 hours. The area is dog friendly (leads required) and great for families.

What I love most is how much beauty you get for so little effort — limestone cliffs, clear water, and sweeping valley views are all right there. Go early morning or late evening for softer light and fewer crowds. If you have time, continue past the stones along the river path to see even more of this stunning valley.
