The Roaches are a dramatic gritstone ridge in the southwest Peak District, famous for their rugged rock formations and sweeping views over the Staffordshire Moorlands. It’s a favourite spot for hikers, climbers, and photographers — especially at sunset, when the rocks glow golden and the surrounding hills fade into soft purples and blues.
There’s parking along the roadside lay-bys on Roach Road (53.1761, -2.0344), and several well-marked paths lead up onto the ridge. The walk itself is moderate, with a short climb to reach the top, but the panorama makes every step worth it.
If you’ve got more time (and energy), combine a Roaches hike with nearby Lud’s Church for an unforgettable circular walk — wild open moorland followed by a deep, mossy chasm hidden in the woods. Together, they showcase two of the Peak District’s most striking landscapes in one trip.
Tip: Bring a flask or picnic and stay for sunset — the ridge offers some of the best evening light in the Peaks.
