Tucked away in the beautiful market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, the famous Door of Durin is a small but magical detail that Lord of the Rings fans (and photographers) will absolutely love. Carved into a quiet doorway, this subtle tribute to Middle-earth feels like a secret waiting to be discovered among the honey-coloured stone streets of the Cotswolds.
We visited as part of a perfect slow Cotswolds morning — staying in Horsley near Stroud, heading to Bibury for sunrise, then on to Snowshill, before arriving in Stow-on-the-Wold for an early lunch before the crowds. Doing it in this order meant we experienced each place at its calmest and most atmospheric.
Parking in Stow is straightforward, with free parking available near Tesco at Forsseway Car Park (A429, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cheltenham GL54 1BX), just a 3-6 minutes walk from the historic centre and the hidden door itself. From there, wandering the town’s lanes is half the joy — antique shops, cosy cafés, and centuries-old stone buildings make Stow one of the most characterful villages in the region.
The Door of Durin might be small, but that’s part of its charm. It’s the kind of detail you could easily miss, yet once you find it, it adds a playful sense of wonder to your visit — like stumbling across a tiny piece of fantasy in real life.
Top Tip: Arrive before lunchtime to enjoy the quiet streets and photograph the doorway without crowds, then reward yourself with a relaxed lunch in one of Stow’s many cosy pubs or cafés.
