Cregennen Lakes is probably my favourite spot in Snowdonia — peaceful, scenic, and surrounded by rugged mountains. I loved spending the afternoon here, simply soaking in the views of the water, the hills, and even the distant sea, with nothing but the sound of the wind and the occasional bleating sheep to break the silence. There are picnic tables right by the lakes, making it perfect for a relaxing lunch or a quiet break after a hike.
The area is also home to the Arthog Stone Circle, a small but atmospheric prehistoric site located a 20-30 minute walk from the lakes. Hiking trails of varying lengths start from the lakes, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding mountains. The single narrow access road adds to the feeling of being completely immersed in nature, but you’ll want to be comfortable driving it.
Practical tips: There’s a car park on site (free for National Trust members), and toilets are available. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat on sunny days, as there’s little shade along the trails. Whether you’re here for a picnic, a gentle walk, or a bit of history at the stone circle, Cregennen Lakes is a perfect spot to unwind surrounded by nature.
