Holme Moss Summit sits high on the border of West Yorkshire and Derbyshire, rising to 524 metres (1,719 ft). It’s one of those places that feels completely exposed and untamed, where the landscape opens up and the scale of the Dark Peak really hits you.
Why It’s Worth Visiting:
Holme Moss is a favourite among cyclists, thanks to its tough but rewarding climb—especially from Holmfirth—but it’s just as impressive if you’re visiting by car or on foot. On clear days, the moorland views stretch for miles, with endless skies and rolling peatlands that feel wonderfully remote.
Our Experience:
On the day we visited, the weather wasn’t ideal and thick mist rolled across the moors, hiding most of the long-distance views. But rather than disappointing, it gave the summit a completely different vibe. Moody, quiet, and almost otherworldly, with the road fading into the fog and clouds drifting past, it felt incredibly atmospheric—and still absolutely worth the stop.
Where to Park:
There are 2 free parking options right at the summit, making this an easy and flexible stop:
Holme Moss Car Park (A6024, Holmfirth HD9 2QH)
The main, paved car park and the best option overall. It also features a large artwork frame, perfect for framing moorland photos like a painting.
Lay-by parking at 53.529792, -1.856327
Unpaved and smaller, but a great backup if the main car park is full.
Both options are ideal for photo stops, short walks, or simply taking in the landscape.
Good to Know:
On clear days, Holme Moss offers vast, open views across the Peak District. On misty days, you’ll get that classic windswept uplands atmosphere instead. Either way, it’s one of those places that stays with you—especially if you love big skies, quiet roads, and slightly wild landscapes.
