The Monte Wicker Basket Cars, or toboggan run, is an exciting and historic tourist attraction in Madeira, Portugal. Two local men, called 'Carreiros', drive wicker toboggans (attached to two wooden runners) from the steps of the Nossa Senhora do Monte Church to Livramento – a suburb of Funchal – two kilometres away. This thrilling journey takes approximately 10 minutes and includes plenty of tight turns as the drivers navigate down the curvy mountain road at speeds of up to 30 mph! Tourists wishing to experience this unique form of transportation are welcome to take the Cable Car from Funchal to Monte, then walk for 5-10 minutes to reach the starting point. The cost of a ride is approximately 30 euros for two people. Be sure to keep an eye out for queues as it is a popular spot!
