Baku/Absheron area, Azerbaijan

In Azerbaijan, you can use various types of public transport, such as the metro, buses, trains, and airplanes. Let’s start with getting around within the city, and below I will explain public transport for traveling outside the city

Transport in Baku

You can get around the city by metro and buses. Both are paid for with the same card, and the fare is the same (currently 0.60). You can buy the card from BakiKart machines in the metro or at bus stops (not at all stops). You can also use the BakiKart app, pay via QR code through the m10 app, or use the most convenient option — payment by credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

You can view the metro map online or inside the metro. A smart map is available inside the metro trains. With it, you can plan a route to your destination and see how long the journey will take.

To view bus routes in Baku, you can also use Google Maps. Simply enter your starting point and destination, and it will show the shortest routes, bus numbers, metro stations, and even when the next bus or metro train will arrive. This method does have a downside: sometimes it may show incorrect bus numbers or stops. However, this can easily be checked at the bus stop itself using the table of bus numbers that stop there. Another convenient website and app for tracking bus routes is www.2gis.az.

Transport around the

country

If you want to travel from Baku to other cities and regions of the country, you can use buses, trains, and airplanes. Always pay attention to the schedule, as all public transport departs strictly at the specified time.

🚌

Buses

By bus, you can travel to other cities, Nakhchivan, Karabakh, etc. Traveling by bus is convenient because routes run very frequently — every hour, and sometimes every 30 minutes, to different regions of the country.

To buy a ticket for an intercity bus, it is most convenient to use the “Biletim” app. The app is available in three languages and is very easy to use. When purchasing a ticket, I recommend entering all the information requested by the app, including your phone number (so you can be notified if your trip is rescheduled or canceled).

In addition to buying tickets through the app, you can also purchase them directly at the bus station. However, it is more convenient, faster, and more reliable to buy tickets through the app.

If you plan to travel by bus to Karabakh, keep in mind that you may need a permit. Getting a permit to enter Karabakh is quite simple via the website www.yolumuzqarabaga.az.

If you want to travel by bus to Nakhchivan, you should check at the bus station whether you are allowed to travel with your citizenship, as the bus route passes through Iran and not everyone can use it. Bus station website: www.avtovagzal.az.

Trains

Traveling by train is comfortable, as there is plenty of space, cafés, restrooms, and you can walk around the carriage if you get tired of sitting, or even sleep if you are taking a long-distance trip in a sleeping compartment.

To buy train tickets, it is most convenient to use the ADY app or the website www.ticket.ady.az. You can check routes, schedules, destinations, and more. There are both night trains (with sleeping compartments) and daytime trains.

✈️

Airplanes

You can fly to some regions of the country with the local airline AZAL. Tickets can be purchased on the website www.azal.az or through the AZAL app.
