What to Expect
Solang is what most people imagine when they think of a Himachali winter postcard, vast white slopes, kids screaming with joy on sleds, and skiers tumbling over snowbanks. But it's not just a winter thing. In summer, it transforms into a buzzing playground with paragliders overhead, zip lines, and ATV rides tearing across dusty trails. In winter though, that’s when Solang really shines.
How to Get There
Solang is just 13 km from Manali, which means it’s either a quick cab ride or a scooter trip away if you’re feeling adventurous. The road climbs slowly into the mountains, flanked by pine forests and often thick fog early in the morning. It’s an easy, scenic ride, and the route is usually clear unless you’re visiting during heavy snowfall.
For the Curious
If you’ve ever wanted to try skiing or snowboarding without flying to Gulmarg or the Alps, this is your shot. There are local instructors, gear rentals, and even a ropeway that takes you up for better slopes. Snowmobiles, tube rides, and even yak rides (yes, they exist) are easy to find. It's chaotic but in a charming, fairground sort of way.
Good to Know
Weekends get packed, so come early if you want to avoid the crowds. Winter gear is available for rent right near the slopes, jackets, boots, gloves, the works, but it’s better to bring your own if you don’t want to smell like the last guy. Prices vary depending on the season and snow, so always ask around a bit. And remember: no shame in falling on your butt a few times, it's all part of it.
