What to Do
This is where everything begins, and honestly, where you’ll probably end up crashing for longer than planned. Kaza is the main town in Spiti, so expect cafés, guesthouses, petrol pump, ATMs (when they work), and a proper bazaar where you can restock on everything from socks to SIM cards. But also, it’s where you meet people. You’ll find backpackers figuring out permits, bikers fixing punctures, solo travellers drinking endless chai.
How to Get There
If you're coming from Manali, the road opens in summer and is rough but driveable. you’ll cross the iconic Chicham Bridge and Kunzum La on the way. From Shimla side, it's longer but smoother. Either way, all routes lead here. Buses stop here too, so even if you’re not driving yourself, you’ll land in Kaza eventually.
For the Curious
Kaza sits at around 3,800m, so don’t be surprised if you feel a little breathless on day one. This isn’t a traditional village, it’s more like a remote capital. And if you’re into geology, landscapes here are a dream. Plus, nearby you’ve got Key Monastery, Hikkim (world’s highest post office), Langza (fossils + Buddha statue), and a bunch of other spots you can hit as day trips.
Good to Know
Stay at least 2–3 nights. One, to acclimatize. Two, because you’ll probably need a break from travel days. Network comes and goes, BSNL is your best shot. Cafés like Sol Café or The Himalayan Café are good to work from if you’re carrying a laptop. And don’t skip the thukpa or momos here, every place has its own version.
