What to Do
If you're in Manali and just need to slow down for a bit, like actually sit, not scroll,Van Vihar is your spot. It’s a forest park, right on the edge of Mall Road, but once you step in, it’s like the noise disappears. The air changes. You walk under tall deodar trees, on soft mud paths with wooden benches every few meters.. I once sat here with a book and just listened to the trees creak in the wind.
How to Get There
It’s literally right next to the Manali Mall Road, towards the Beas River side. You’ll spot the small ticket counter and the faded green gate. You can just walk in from wherever you are in town , no vehicle needed. Entry is paid but it’s super cheap, and boating has a separate little fee if you want to do that too. Takes less than 5 minutes to reach if you're anywhere near central Manali.
For the Curious
Van Vihar isn’t some ancient forest or a protected national park, it’s more like Manali’s backyard. Locals come here too, not just tourists. You’ll see kids playing, couples hiding in plain sight, and the occasional monkey judging your snacks. The deodar trees here aren’t planted in neat rows , they’re old, tall, and shadowy, and the filtered sunlight through them feels unreal in the afternoons. It’s also right by the Beas River, so if you walk towards the back, you’ll get some amazing riverside views with the mountains rising right behind them.
Good to Know
Closes by early evening (usually before 7), and they won’t let you in once it’s close to closing time. The place can get a bit muddy after rain, so wear proper shoes. Boating usually runs only during good weather and not in winter. Also, monkeys. Don’t feed them, don’t stare at them, and definitely don’t open food packets in front of them unless you’re okay with them joining your picnic. It's a chill place, and great if you just want to take a break from the constant moving around.
