If you're heading to Manali and skipping Old Manali, you’re doing it wrong. This part of town feels like its own little country, quieter, way more chill, and filled with that familiar mix of travellers who came for a week and never left. I stayed near Manu Temple, walked through lanes that smelled like fresh waffles and weed (not kidding), and ended up in cafes where the owner knows your name by Day 2. By day, Old Manali hums gently. Cafes spill out with backpackers journaling in Moleskines, dogs nap under café tables, and shopkeepers smile without tryin.

How to Get There
Once you’re in Manali, just keep walking (or driving) past the main market, cross the bridge over the Beas, and welcome to Old Manali. It’s 10 minutes away but feels like a completely different town. You don’t need a taxi unless you’re carrying a suitcase the size of a human.

What to Expect
This is where the backpackers are. Where locals are chill, the cafes don’t rush you, and you’ll probably run into the same people every evening. It’s full of homestays with wooden balconies, firewood kitchens, and dogs who adopt you. Don’t expect fancy, expect comfort. Expect to wake up late and not feel guilty about it.

For the Curious
The vibe here didn’t happen by accident. Old Manali started becoming a traveller favourite decades ago, long before Instagram. Some cafés and guesthouses have been running since the ‘90s, you’ll see Beatles posters, Bob Marley flags, and diaries left behind by people who came for a weekend and stayed half a year. Also, Manu Temple sits quietly in the background,a small detour that feels more local than religious. Walk around the apple orchards nearby and you'll feel like you're trespassing, but you're not. Everyone’s welcome here.

Good to Know
– Signal comes and goes. Some people consider that a blessing.
– Carry cash, not everywhere takes UPI and ATMs often act up.
– Great food options, from Israeli to Tibetan. Try cafés like Café 1947 or Sunshine.
– Don’t come expecting big sights, this is where you come to slow down.
– Evenings get cold, even in summer. Layer up.
- If you’re here in August or September, don’t miss the apple harvest buzz.
