How to Get There
Moonland Viewpoint is located just before Lamayuru village, about 115–120 km from Leh on the Leh–Srinagar Highway. It’s a quick 2–3 km detour off the main road, usually marked with a small BRO sign. It’s easily accessible by car or bike, no hike required. No permits needed.
What to Expect
This natural viewpoint offers a striking view of yellow-hued, layered rock formations unique to this part of Ladakh. The terrain looks like dried, cracked clay sculpted into soft ridges and bowls. Locals and visitors call it “Moonland” because of its eerie, lunar like texture and color. The area is completely open.
For the Curious
The formations were shaped by millennia of wind and water erosion.
Often used as a photography stop en route to Lamayuru.
Best visited during morning or late afternoon when the sun highlights the layered textures.
Good to Know
No entry fee, no facilities beyond roadside stalls.
Not a trekking area ,just a quick, scenic stop.
Combine with Lamayuru Monastery, Fotu La Pass, or Wanla village on a westward trip from Leh.
Very little signage—ask locals or drivers to guide you to the exact pull-off point.
