How to Get There
Shanti Stupa is located on a hilltop in Chanspa, just 5 km from Leh Main Market. You can reach it by car, bike, or on foot. There's a well-paved road that leads to the top, or you can climb the 500+ steps from the base for a more rewarding route. No permits are required.
What to Expect
Built in the late 1980s by Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists, Shanti Stupa is a white-domed Buddhist monument offering panoramic views over Leh town, the Indus Valley, and surrounding mountain ranges. The structure itself is simple but striking, with golden Buddha statues, painted reliefs depicting Buddha’s life, and prayer wheels. It’s a peaceful place for quiet reflection, especially at sunrise or sunset, when the light paints the mountains around you.
For the Curious
Inaugurated in 1991 by the 14th Dalai Lama.
Built to promote world peace and unity, and to commemorate 2,500 years of Buddhism.
Part of a larger global effort by Japanese Buddhist groups to build peace stupas in remote regions.
