The mochi-making show at Nakatanidou is pure theater - these craftsmen pound mochi at lightning speed while perfectly coordinating their movements. It's mesmerizing watching them create their signature yomogi mochi, this gorgeous green treat made with mugwort that tastes as good as the performance looks.

Each piece comes dusted with kinako (roasted soybean flour) and filled with sweet red bean paste. The taste is uniquely Japanese - that bright green color from the mugwort gives it this fresh, almost herbal flavor that perfectly balances the sweetness.

The speed and precision of their mochi-pounding performance draws crowds, but the line moves quickly since they're so efficient at their craft.
