Where The Kids Roam

Yes, temple lodging in Koyasan isn't cheap, but Dai'en-in delivered an experience you just can't get at a regular hotel. Founded back in the 10th century, this place oozes history - and getting up early for the morning prayers was absolutely worth it, even if we were a bit groggy!

The setting is perfect - right at the entrance of Kiyoshi Shinin Valley. While they've added modern conveniences like WiFi and public baths, the historical atmosphere remains intact. It's pretty special knowing you're sleeping in a place that's mentioned in the Heike Monogatari (one of Japan's most famous medieval epic tales).

That transition from daytime tourist site to nighttime sanctuary really makes you understand why people choose temple stays over regular hotels, despite the cost.
