If you're making the trek out to Takachiho Gorge (which you definitely should), it'd be a bit silly to skip the shrine. The setting alone is worth it, with these massive cedar trees creating this mystical vibe that feels straight out of a Miyazaki film.

Now, about that traditional Yokagura dance show... let's be real. While the adults might appreciate the whole "masked dancers telling ancient stories about the sun goddess Amaterasu" thing, the kids were pretty much counting ceiling tiles. It's one of those cultural experiences that sounds more exciting than it actually is for the younger crowd.

But the shrine itself? Pretty spectacular. Just maybe don't promise the kids an exciting dance performance unless they're really into slow-paced traditional performances. Think of it as the cultural vegetables you have to eat before getting to the gorge dessert!
