Tsumago ended up being the perfect finale to what turned out to be our best day in Japan - that Magome-Tsumago hike is something else! We timed it just right (or got really lucky) to catch the sunset over this perfectly preserved Edo-period post town. The way the light hit those traditional buildings with all the power lines buried and no cars in sight... it really felt like stepping back in time.

The traditional teahouse was a perfect stop after all that hiking - there's something special about resting your tired feet in a building that's been hosting weary travelers for centuries. Sitting there, sipping tea and having a traditional snack, you can imagine all the other hikers who've done exactly the same thing over hundreds of years on this same route.

Though I have to admit, we cut it REAL close with transportation - barely caught the last bus out and then had to sprint for the final train back to Nagoya. Nothing like a little end-of-day transit panic to keep things exciting!

What's wild about Tsumago is how committed they are to maintaining that historical vibe - no visible power lines, no cars, just wooden buildings and stone paths that look exactly like they did hundreds of years ago. After hiking the old Nakasendo route to get here, arriving in Tsumago feels like you've actually walked back into the Edo period... just with the modern twist of having to worry about catching that last train home!
