For cemetery lovers, the Ōtani Mausoleum is Kyoto's hidden historical gem. Sprawling across 33,000 square meters—thanks to a generous donation from Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshimune in 1745—this sacred site feels like a quiet universe unto itself. The final resting place of Shinran, founder of Shin Buddhism, the mausoleum has weathered centuries of relocation, finally settling into its current spot in 1670.
