While everyone's rushing to the more famous spots in Takayama's old town, Hie Shrine offers one of those peaceful moments you're always hoping to find in Japan. It's got that classic red torii gate entrance and stone steps leading up, but without the tourist crowds you'll find at some of Takayama's other attractions.
