Fair warning: this isn't a budget activity, but watching my wife and kids get totally absorbed in painting their own Hakata dolls made it worth every yen. While they were deep in concentration mode for a couple of hours, carefully choosing colors and designs for their 400-year-old art project, I took the opportunity to wander around and explore the area.
