This massive green space surrounding the Imperial Palace offers a perfect break from temple hopping, but be careful with your timing. Several sections require paid entry and have specific opening hours - which we unfortunately discovered after arriving. The main grounds are free and always open, but some of the more interesting historical areas have limited hours.

What makes it worth visiting is the sheer size and peacefulness. You can find actual solitude here, which is rare in central Kyoto. The expansive lawns are perfect for letting kids run around after behaving at temples all day.

Despite parts being closed during our visit, we still enjoyed walking the tree-lined paths and seeing glimpses of the Imperial Palace. Just check the schedule before planning your visit, especially for the Sento Imperial Palace and other historical buildings within the grounds.
