Where The Kids Roam

We missed out on Nanzenji Temple, but it's worth mentioning for anyone heading to Kyoto. Situated at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains, this Zen temple has been around since the 13th century, offering a deep dive into Japan's spiritual history. The grounds are free to wander, though you'll need to pay for access to some of the temple's more intimate spaces.

The temple complex is vast, featuring the imposing Sanmon gate, a rock garden that's a study in Zen simplicity, and several enchanting subtemple gardens. But what really catches the eye is the brick aqueduct slicing through the grounds - an odd but fascinating juxtaposition of industry and tranquility. This blend of history, nature, and architecture makes Nanzenji a must-visit for those seeking a peaceful retreat into Japan's past.
