Cusco sits at approximately 11,150 feet above sea level and was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it’s a layered city where Inca stonework forms the foundation of colonial churches, plazas, and narrow cobblestone streets.

This is not where I recommend starting your Peru itinerary.

Most travelers acclimate better by spending 2–3 nights in the Sacred Valley (lower elevation) before moving to Cusco for 1–2 nights at the end of their trip.

How to structure your time here:

• 1–2 nights is typically enough

• Plan lighter activities your first day

• Stay centrally (near Plaza de Armas or San Blas) to avoid unnecessary hills

• Use Cusco as your cultural deep dive before departure

Don’t miss:

• Plaza de Armas

• San Blas neighborhood

• Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun)

• Sacsayhuamán ruins overlooking the city

What to know:

Altitude affects everyone differently. Hydrate, move slowly, and avoid heavy meals or alcohol on arrival. Many luxury hotels offer oxygen-enriched rooms.

Cusco is essential — but it’s best experienced at the right point in your itinerary.
