Joining a Satoyama E-Bike Patrol

I recently visited Shiobara Onsen in Tochigi, a hot spring village with more than 1,200 years of history. It’s quiet and beautiful, but also very real countryside Japan. Bears still come down from the mountains here, and when they enter human areas, they often have to be captured and put down. That’s why locals patrol the surrounding satoyama, the foothills where people and wildlife overlap. What surprised me was that they let visitors join these patrols, so I did.

The patrol is done by e-bike, riding through forest paths, farming villages, and hills overlooking the onsen town. It’s not extreme and you don’t need experience. Along the way, local guides point out animal tracks and explain how people here live with nature. After the ride, the locals prepared a simple home-style lunch made from regional ingredients. It isn’t always available, but they told me they’re happy to make an exception for YamaTrips followers. If you want a grounded, active way to see rural Japan beyond the usual routes, this experience is worth checking out.
