Yoshino & Kumano Kodo Shugendo Pilgrimage

I’m launching a tour with Unveil Japan starting May 2026 that takes travelers deep into Yoshino–Kumano National Park. I’ve personally curated every part of this experience to ensure it goes beyond a typical tour. From the ryokan and cuisine to the local hosts, everything has been chosen to reflect the true character of the region.

To kick things off, we’re offering a special price for guests who complete a short post-tour questionnaire (about 10 minutes).

Itinerary:

Day 1 eases you in with semi-guided exploration and an introduction to the world of Shugendo.

Day 2 is the heart of the journey—an immersive day visiting Kumano Hongu Taisha, Nachi Falls, and mountain routes through Yoshino–Kumano National Park.

Day 3 slows things down, giving you time to enjoy the traditional town and reflect on the experience.

Some of the activities like waterfall training and goma fire rituals are difficult to access even for locals. Accommodations and most meals are local, reflecting the real food culture of the region and very different from what you find in Japan’s major cities.

Now, to be honest, it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for something light, this may feel like a lot. But if you want something deeper and more real, this is it.
