Safety?

Is it safe?

Patagonia, Chile

We felt very safe in Patagonia. We didn’t encounter any situations that raised our suspicions. Of course, it’s important to follow basic safety rules, such as not leaving luggage unattended, avoiding visible items in the car, and spreading your cash across multiple places. The adage “opportunity makes the thief” applies worldwide. However, we believe Patagonia is one of the safest regions in South America. It has a relatively sparse population and generally low crime rates.

Here are the basic safety principles we always follow during our travels:

  • Research before travelling: We collect information about our destination, including local culture, customs, laws, and potential risks. We plan our trip carefully, covering transportation, accommodations, and attractions to ensure we have a clear action plan.

  • Keep loved ones informed: We share our travel plans with family and friends and stay in regular contact with them.

  • Stay vigilant in crowded public areas like airports, train stations, shopping centres, or busy streets. Ensure that valuable items such as wallets, phones, and cameras are not visible or easily accessible. A person is less likely to attempt a robbery if the potential victim does not appear to possess anything valuable.

  • Use legal and trusted transportation: We select licensed and reputable transportation options. When using taxis, we ensure they are official and have a functioning meter. If renting a car, we check its technical condition and verify that it has appropriate insurance coverage.

  • Carry copies of all documents at all times.

  • Before travelling, we always buy travel insurance to protect us against unforeseen situations like lost luggage, illness, or accidents.

  • We always listen to our instincts. If something feels off or certain situations make us uncomfortable, we try to avoid them.
