Travelling between Cities

There are many ways to travel through Patagonia, and we saw people using various modes of transportation.

  • Bus

Buses are a popular mode of transportation in Patagonia, providing regular connections between major cities and tourist attractions. They are generally more affordable than renting a car. Additionally, you can take night buses to save travel time and eliminate the need for overnight accommodations. However, buses can become crowded, especially during the tourist season, and they may not offer complete flexibility in travel itineraries. Routes can also be lengthy and exhausting, and border crossings may take extra time.

  • Car

Renting a car offers the greatest independence for travel. It allows you to stop anywhere, explore smaller attractions, and adjust your route as you desire. Although it is the most expensive option, the freedom it provides is unmatched. Additionally, a car can serve as a backup accommodation option if you have trouble finding a place to stay.

  • Hitchhiking

Hitchhiking can be a cost-effective way to travel since it eliminates expenses related to car rentals, fuel, or tickets. It also provides an opportunity to meet new people, including locals and other travellers. However, the main challenges of hitchhiking include time constraints and flexibility. In Patagonia, the cities are widely spaced, which can make it difficult to find a ride to a specific destination. Although the average waiting time for a ride is unknown, the harsh Patagonian weather—characterized by rain and wind—can be quite difficult for hitchhikers. Nevertheless, this travel option is worth considering if you have ample time and a limited budget.

  • Bicycle

Cycling is for the most determined travellers. Weather conditions can often be challenging in Patagonia, making having several consecutive days of sunshine rare. The wind can either be a helpful ally or a significant obstacle. Additionally, cycling requires good physical fitness and a backup plan in case of an unexpected injury. However, it allows you to experience nature up close and explore at a leisurely pace. We admired the cyclists who chose this mode of transportation.

  • Airplane

Flights are available between major cities. For example, you can fly from El Calafate to Ushuaia, which is the southernmost point of our trip. This is the most expensive option, but it can complement any of the solutions described above.
