Christmas Markets

Christmas Markets are one of Germany’s greatest traditions, taking place in cities both large and small.

In times past, children believed that Santa Claus "bought" their Christmas gifts at these markets, known as Weihnachtsmärkte.

Munich takes on a truly special atmosphere at this time of year, with numerous Christmas Markets scattered throughout the city. The highlight, of course, is the Marienplatz Christmas Market, held in the city's traditional main square, featuring 200 beautifully decorated stalls. This magnificent Christmas Market attracts over 4 million visitors every year.

One of the key attractions is the musical performances held at the Neues Rathaus—the New Town Hall.

Other notable markets include:

- Sendlinger Tor

- Kripperlmarkt

- Chinesischer Turm

- Schwabing

- Mittelaltermarkt
