Transport at the Romantic Road
Car, train, or on foot?
Angela and Marcelo Meyer
Romantic Road, Germany
A car is by far the best option for visiting the Romantic Road, as it allows you to easily stop wherever and for as long as you want.
When using public transportation, the second best option is to use trains, and the last option is to use buses.
Below is a detailed description of each of these options, as well as how to explore the Romantic Road by bicycle or even on foot!
Car
Remember that the Romantic Road consists of several roads connecting the towns, not a single road. Many of these roads are secondary, and others pass through the larger towns. You will mainly follow the following roads: B25, B27, B290, A81, L2251, St 2269.
Use a GPS, always typing in the name of the next town to be visited.
I suggest the following itineraries, depending on the number of days available:
3 days:
- Day 1: Würzburg
- Day 2: Würzburg – Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- Day 3: Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Füssen
5 days:
- Day 1: Würzburg
- Day 2: Würzburg – Bad Mergentheim – Weikersheim – Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- Day 3: Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- Day 4: Rothenburg ob der Tauber Tauber–Augsburg
- 5th day: Augsburg – Füssen
7 days:
- 1st day: Würzburg
- 2nd day: Würzburg – Bad Mergentheim – Weikersheim – Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- 3rd day: Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- 4th day: Rothenburg o. d. Tauber – Dinkelsbühl – Nördlingen – Donauwörth – Augsburg
- 5th day: Augsburg
- 6th day: Augsburg – Landsberg am Lech – Steingaden – Füssen
- 7th day: Füssen – Schwangau (Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles)
Train
Using Deutsche Bahn regional trains, departing from Würzburg and heading to your chosen cities to visit is the best train sequence.
Please note that many smaller towns along the route, which are listed in this guide, do not have train connections, so I suggest checking the DB (Deutsche Bahn) website for route options.
Suggested itinerary along the Romantic Road by train, departing from Frankfurt International Airport:
- Day 1: Frankfurt – Würzburg
- Day 2: Würzburg - Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- Day 3: Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- Day 4: Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Augsburg
- Day 5: Augsburg – Füssen
Bayern-Ticket
The Bayern-Ticket is a one-day travel ticket that allows unlimited travel on regional transport within Bavaria.
It is ideal for tourists, families, and groups who want to explore the region economically.
Since the Romantic Road is largely located in Bavaria, especially the southern towns, it is the ideal transport ticket if you plan to use the train on your trip.
Schedules
The ticket is available in two versions:
- Bayern-Ticket (daytime): valid from 9:00 AM to 3:00 AM the following day, Monday to Friday; and from 12:00 AM to 3:00 AM the following day, on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
- Bayern-Ticket Nacht (nighttime): valid from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following day, Sunday to Thursday; and from 6:00 PM to 7:00 AM the following day, on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays.
Prices
The price of the Bayern-Ticket varies according to the number of passengers:
- 1 person: €32 (daytime) / €30 (nighttime)
- 2 people: €42 (daytime) / €37 (nighttime)
- 3 people: €52 (daytime) / €44 (nighttime)
- 4 people: €62 (daytime) / €51 (nighttime)
- 5 people: €72 (daytime) / €58 (nighttime)
Each additional ticket costs €10 per person. Children up to 5 years old travel free. Up to three children aged 6 to 14 can travel free with one Bayern-Ticket. From four children aged 6 to 14, an additional ticket must be purchased.
Validity
The Bayern-Ticket is valid on:
- Regional trains operated by Deutsche Bahn (RE, RB, S-Bahn) and other regional operators.
- Trains operated by Bayerische Regiobahn, agilis, and Go-Ahead Bayern.
- Buses and trams within Bavarian transport associations.
- Some regional trains in Austria, such as between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck.
It is not valid on long-distance trains such as ICE, IC, EC, RJ, RJX, ECE, or WB.
The Bayern-Ticket covers all of Bavaria, including cities such as Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, Regensburg, Füssen, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Additionally, it allows travel to Salzburg, Austria, and some regions of Austria, such as Innsbruck, when using specific regional trains.
Where to buy
You can purchase the Bayern-Ticket:
- At Deutsche Bahn ticket counters and ticket machines.
- Online through the official Deutsche Bahn website.
For groups of 2 to 5 people, the Bayern-Ticket offers excellent value for money.
If you plan to travel overnight, consider the Bayern-Ticket Nacht.
Check routes and schedules on the Deutsche Bahn website to ensure your destination is covered by the Bayern-Ticket.
Bus
There isn't a bus line that runs hourly, for example, to hop on and off in towns, visit, and then catch another bus to continue to another town, hop-on hop-off style.
There is a special Romantic Road bus for a Day Trip, with excursions departing from Frankfurt or Würzburg to Rothenburg and returning to the starting point.
This bus runs only on Sundays, from the beginning of May until mid-September.
There are also minivans for these same routes, for special groups of up to 4 people. The minivans are available every month and every day of the week.

Bycicle
Cycling along the Romantic Road is a fantastic experience.
There is definitely no more intense way to experience Germany's most famous and beloved holiday route! No other form of travel offers such an intense sensory experience.
It's 500 kilometers along the tranquil route, from the Main River to the Alps, or from the Alps to the Main River.
And all this on quiet roads, exclusive cycle paths and rarely used secondary roads, far from the chaotic traffic of the modern era. Follow the green signs with a small bicycle drawn on them.
Cyclists with electric bikes will find charging stations in almost every town!
The German tourism office offers free GPS data for the entire route to help you plan and complete your bike ride.
This data is divided into ten stages, which are not necessarily the recommended steps, but divide the stretch into approximately 50km per day.
The GPS data orientation is north to south, i.e., from the Main River to the Alps. The altitude difference between Würzburg and Füssen is about 600m, which, divided over a seven-day bike ride, equates to about 85m per day. Therefore, the altitude difference isn't really a reason to travel from south to north.
There's a much more important reason to head north-south: the main wind direction along the entire route is usually west or northwest, so those traveling north will likely be cycling against the wind, while those traveling north to south will have the wind at their backs.
For more information on the stages, and to download GPS data, click this website.
There are also specialized tour companies offering individual bike tours. See the websites below:
Hiking
The Romantic Road is a trail that offers not only a wealth of nature and stunning landscapes, but also a number of cultural attractions.
Along the route, hikers have the opportunity to visit historical buildings, stroll through picturesque towns, or stop at one of the numerous inns, the Gasthäuser.
The Würzburg to Füssen hiking route is fully accessible. The paths and trails are paved, and the ascents and descents, although challenging, are easy to navigate.
Along the Romantic Road, hikers can stop in towns and villages, rest for a few days, or simply stay overnight in a picturesque inn.
The trails are marked with informative signs. These signs indicate interesting sights and nearby villages.
The Romantic Road is divided into 25 stages, and each stage can be done in 1 day, depending on the individual. If you don't have 25 days, you can naturally use public transport and eliminate stages until you reach the point where you will continue your hike.
Each stage is unique and filled with stunning nature and culture. The hike passes through vineyards, valleys, rivers and streams... unforgettable!
Click this website to see each stage in detail and download the GPS data.
