This is one of my favorite places in Japan, if not my absolute favorite. I’ve been here multiple times in different seasons, and each visit felt special in its own way.

After visiting many ryokans with onsen across Japan, this one stayed my favorite for so many reasons. The onsen experience is unforgettable, with large outdoor baths surrounded by nature. Some baths are mixed, and you can wear a special garment called yuami, which makes it comfortable to enjoy together as a couple or with friends.

The atmosphere here changes beautifully with the seasons. Winter feels magical, summer is fresh and green, autumn brings warm colors, and spring adds delicate sakura. It’s truly a place you can return to again and again.

What makes it even more unique is that you can also see yama-zakura (mountain cherry blossoms) here in late April to early May, adding a soft, natural sakura atmosphere that feels very different from the city.

The traditional architecture, spacious rooms, delicious seasonal food, and the warm hospitality always made me feel welcome and relaxed. There’s also a deep sense of history here, as this onsen has been enjoyed since ancient times.

🚐 How to get there
If you’re not renting a car, you can use the free courtesy shuttle bus (reservation required).
• From Jomo-Kogen Station: 13:00 or 15:00
• From Minakami Station: 15:15

For departure, the bus leaves the onsen in the morning and goes back to both stations.

If the shuttle is full, you can also take a local bus from Jomo-Kogen to Minakami, then continue to Takaragawa Onsen. From the nearest stop, a courtesy car will pick you up.
