I’d definitely recommend stopping at Libohovë Castle if you’re in the area, especially if you love places that feel a little forgotten in the best way.

The castle ruins are really impressive, with old stone walls, corner towers, and loads of space to wander around. It’s said to have been given by Ali Pasha as a wedding gift to his sister in the 18th century, which makes it feel even more interesting when you’re walking through the grounds.

What I love about this place is that it doesn’t feel overly touristy or polished. You can usually explore it quietly, take your time, and just imagine what it would have looked like back in the day. And, because this is Albania, there’s a good chance you’ll be sharing the castle with a few local sheep.

Make sure you climb up around the walls if you can, because the views over Libohovë, the Drino Valley, and the mountains are beautiful. It’s free to enter, easy to explore, and a really lovely stop if you’re visiting Gjirokastër or driving through this part of southern Albania.
